Who is Shaykh Jami'u III
HIS EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
"Say: 'Are those who know equal to those who know not?' It is only men of understanding who will remember"(Qur'an 39:9)
As aforementioned in the previous series that both Shaykh's parents were pagans hence they could not influence their child Islamic wise, also they did not want him to be influenced by western education, so they resorted to taking the young Shaykh to farm.
However, this could no longer be sustained consequent upon the death of his father, Shaykh was thus put in the care of his maternal uncle, Mallam Lawal Adegoke, this man was the father of Alhaji Bello Yayi, the current Mufti of Offa. Since this man was a Muslim, he converted the young Shaykh to a Muslim and renamed him Jimoh(How Yoruba people call Jami'u in those days)
Shaykh's sojourn in the acquisition of knowledge started when he was in the care of this uncle. He started learning the recitation of the Qur'an from Mallam Ismail Jeje, the father of Alhaji Mustafa Jeje who is the current missioner of Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Offa Branch. The traditional method of teaching was in vogue then whereby a student will start by oral chanting and memorising of unvocalized Quranic verses. It was reported that he studied half of the Qur'an from this cleric i.e 30 Ahzaab, and in the same vein, he was never taught a thing twice, thus, he was endowed with an eidetic brain.
With enthusiasm about acquisition for more Islamic knowledge, Shaykh left Offa for Ilorin consequent upon his completion of the Qur'an in the former. Eulogise as a home of Islam clerics in Yorubaland, Ilorin is a town renowned with different kinds of Islamic scholars who spread through all walks of life. Shaykh learnt and benefited a great deal from some of these clerics. These knowledge are both exoteric and esoteric. Prominent among them is Shaykh Bashar Adangba from whom he acquired ilmi knowledge. It was reported that he lived with this cleric, and from there, he used to go to other scholars to learn. Among them are Mallam Baba at Oke Leru from whom he learnt Tafsirul-Qur'an(Interpretation of the Qur'an) and hisab(mathematics)
More so, he learnt how to write Arabic calligraphy from Mallam Musa of Gogoro Mosque. This skill later became his means of livelihood. Among other scholars whom Shaykh Bulala benefited from are Mallam Ade Agbede and Mallam Musa Atere.
However, suffice to say that Shaykh has been exhibiting some distinctive instincts at this stage in life. First and foremost, as a youth, he was renowned with obedience, hardwork and being diligence. He used to fast for many days within a month and liked being in seclusion whenever he fasts without anybody directing him. He was fond of drawing many beautiful things in a slate without anybody teaching him how to draw it.
Remarking on the genius trait in him, Shaykh Bashar remarked thus "Alfa Offa(Shaykh Jami'u), you have learnt enough and what we did not even teach you, I know you have instinctively known them. I bless you and nobody shall be your teacher again from today...."
In the same vein, I was informed during the course of my interview that Shaykh always acknowledged receipt of letters written to him in Arabic and got fury when he see any letter written to him in Yoruba language to the extent of tearing it at times. This shows his proficiency in the language considering the level of Arabic literacy among his contemporary during such age. Also I possess one of the manuscript written by him and I can attest that he was really blessed with a good handwriting.
In view of these, it is deduced that Shaykh was an Islamic scholar who undertook a sojourn in quest for knowledge. His proficiency in Arabic literacy and his skilful Arabic calligraphy are well attested to by the writer and remarked "nulli secundus" among his contemporaries. This thus debunked the claim held in some quarters that the sage was an ignorant man. Shaykh strived for his acquisition of knowledge because 'ex nihilo nihil fit' i.e nothing comes from nothing.
